Do you have any home goals this year? Does your home feel a little stale? Maybe you want to jazz things up a bit by adding a splash of color to the walls? Or maybe you want to go bigger and remodel the kitchen or master bathroom? Now is a great time to assess what it is you’d like to do with your home.

If you’re considering a remodel or just a little DIY action, there are some things you should keep in mind. Remodeling a part of your home is usually a good way to add value to the home and it makes it more appealing when you sell it. However, if you plan on staying in your home a remodel can make living in the home much more enjoyable.

Aging in Place – You might want to consider a remodel if you plan on aging in place. Aging in place is when a person or couple decide they want to live their senior years in their home instead of moving in with children, an assisted living home, or nursing home. Homes will often need some retro fitting to accomodate wheelchairs, walkers and even canes. Counters can be lowered and bathrooms can be renovated with no-threshold walk-in showers for ease and safety.

Open Floor Plan – While not all homes can be remodeled to have an open main level floor plan, many of them can. Gone are the days of the kitchen cut off from the rest of the house. These days the kitchen is recognized as the heart of the home and is designed accordingly. If you home’s structure permits, you can remodel your main living space to incorporate the kitchen and living areas together.

Fitness – Many home owners, when building new homes, have chosen to include work out areas, fitness rooms and even indoor sport courts. Sport courts and fitness areas are highly coveted in used homes – they’re still pretty rare – so they can increase the asking price, however talk to your remodeler about ROI on a project such as this.

Moving or Not – How long do you plan on staying in your home? If you’re goal is to stay for another decade or so you’ll want to do your homework and talk to a professional about what they see for future trends and then incorporate as much of that in your design. If you only plan on staying for a couple of years, you might want to do smaller scale remodels.

No matter how you choose to reach your home goals this year, talking to a professional remodeler can help to clarify exactly what you need to do. Call us, we’d love to be a part of your home goals this year.
