If you’ve decided to take the plunge and remodel your kitchen, congratulations! Getting ready for a kitchen remodel can seem overwhelming if you’ve never done a major remodel before. A kitchen remodel can be especially challenging if you are planning on staying in the home during the renovation. A kitchen remodel is exciting, and it’s so worth the investment, but there are a few things you should do to get through the project with as little stress as possible.

Once you’ve chosen your design, chosen the remodeler and signed the contract, all that’s left is for you to do is wait for the project to be completed. If you’re living in the home while the renovation takes place you’ll want to make sure you do these things before any demo starts.

Getting Ready for a Kitchen Remodel

Makeshift Kitchen – No matter if you’re doing a small remodel or a complete kitchen renovation, the odds are you’re not going to be able to use your current kitchen. Water will be shut off, and of course there will be contractors working in the current kitchen. You’re going to want to create a makeshift kitchen in another area of your home. The laundry room, study or garage make good temporary kitchens. Of course if you’re lucky enough to have a wet bar in the basement you can use that area quite effectively.

Use Disposable – To save the hassle of having to wash dishes in a laundry sink or bucket, use disposable utensils and plates. If possible look for eco friendly plates that can be composted. Recycle plastic utensils if possible.

Appliances – If you’re going to use the same appliances in the newly remodeled kitchen you can probably use them while construction is taking place, just in a different room. You’ll probably need at least a microwave, coffee maker, toaster or toaster oven and a fridge.

Eating Out – Eating out is wonderful, but it can become costly and it’s not always healthy. Eat out sparingly. Instead pick up ready made meals at your local grocery store. They’re hot, healthy and reasonably priced.

Stay Out of the Way – It can be difficult for the homeowner to stay out of the way of the contractors, but it’s necessary so they can do their job and maintain your safety. Instruct children to keep away from the construction zone. Keeps pets out of the area too.

We understand a kitchen remodel can be a stressful time for the homeowners and we want to make sure you are safe during the process. Getting ready for a kitchen remodel doesn’t have to be challenging. While it can get old to have contractors traipsing through your home for weeks on end, remember, it is temporary and when finished you’ll have a gorgeous kitchen that you’ll love.
