Being a custom home builder in Salt Lake City, Utah means we get to work with great people who know what they want in a new custom built home. We talk with each homeowner to determine what kind of lifestyle they have and how we can design a home that meets all their needs. The great thing about talking to all these homeowners is that we learn a lot about people along the way. One of the things we’ve noticed is that there are certain signs that indicate a family is ready to build a custom home instead of buying a used home. So how do you know you’re ready to build a custom home?
6 Signs You’re Ready to Build a Custom Home
You can’t find the right home – You may have found homes that come close to what you see in your mind’s eye, but it still isn’t right. You’ve probably got Zillow alerts coming in everyday and yet you still can’t find a home that is in the right location, with the right amenities and within your budget. You can’t find the right home because all those homes were built for someone else with different needs and desires. If you want a home that is uniquely yours, you’re going to want to design it and build it.
You know where you want to live – You’ve done your homework, you know which schools you want to send your children to, you know how far you want to commute and you know the community you want to be a part of. Unfortunately, many of these things won’t come together when you’re looking at inventoried homes. If you want to be in control of where and how you live, building is the option that makes the most sense.
You know what you want – Many people, when searching used homes, will compromise on their home purchase because the house has much of what they are looking for. Maybe the home is located near the best school in the region, you might choose to forego design elements such as a 4th bedroom or finished basement because you want to be in the best possible school district. When building new, you can choose all of those things.
You don’t compromise – You know what you want and you know how to achieve it. You also know that buying someone else’s dream home will never make it your dream home.
You understand the tradeoff – Yes, it usually costs more to build a custom home than to buy a used home, but you understand that when you build a new home you’re going to have savings down the line. Utilities, maintenance, and general management of the home will be a breeze in a custom home as opposed to a used home. Even one built just a few years earlier can be more difficult to maintain.
You want a home that fits your needs – Maybe you keep horse, or collect vintage motorcycles, whatever you do that makes you happy, odds are you’ll need to house it in or near your home. If you like to tinker with tools you’ll want a workshop, if you are a puzzle enthusiast you’ll want a game room with plenty of table space. Whatever your thing is, a custom home can be designed around it to make it even more enjoyable for you.
If you can check off most of these signs, then it’s a great time to sit down and meet with a builder and start planning out your dream home. Call us at 801-416-3131 to learn more.
