Whether updating one room or adding a whole new addition to your home, remodeling can require a pretty hefty investment. So, it goes without saying you want the finished project to look amazing. That means having a plan in place to ensure each phase of the project goes off without a hitch. To help you get started, we’ve put together a list of 10 common interior design mistakes and how to avoid them. Check them out below!
1. Rushing the design phase.
Leaving enough time for the design phase is essential to a well-executed remodeling project. Failing to set aside enough time to properly plan can disrupt the way the design flows and how furniture is placed throughout the room. The last thing you want is to find out things like outlets weren’t put in the right place!
2. Disregarding room dimensions.
When selecting furniture and accessories, pay attention to the room’s dimensions. The size and shape of the room can impact how furniture looks, as well as how full or empty the room appears. By selecting pieces that complement the room’s shape and dimensions, you’ll be able to strike the right balance.
3. Using too many colors at once.
We get it, neutral colors can be boring. However, using too many colors of the rainbow at once can result in disaster! Instead, opt for a neutral color and select one or two bold colors to use as an accent. This will add some volume and drama to the room without going overboard.
4. Not including a focal point in the room’s design.
Without a focal point to draw the eye, the room will feel awkward and unbalanced. Incorporate visual interest into the room’s design using things like art and furniture, or use more permanent pieces like bay windows or a fireplace.
5. Failing to pay attention to the room’s acoustics.
Did you know room design can impact the acoustics of your space? Pay attention to how certain design elements affect the space before committing to them. No one wants to have to yell across the room or be subjected to weird echoes, after all.
6. Suffering from bad lighting.
Lighting is important for a variety reasons. It affects your mood as well as the ambiance of the room. Too much light can be blinding, while not enough can make the room feel dreary. Adding as much natural light to the room as possible is the key to creating a room that is both inviting and comfortable.
7. Not incorporating enough variety into the design.
While you want each element in your design to complement one another, don’t get too matchy-matchy. Buying products from different stores and incorporating different textures into your design will keep it from falling flat.
8. Underutilizing natural elements.
Modern room design had a good run, but we’re all about incorporating natural elements into interior design. Doing so adds warmth to the room, which is perfect for making newly remodeled spaces feel more like home. Mix and match textures like wood and leather. Then tie it all together with a few potted plants and woven baskets.
9. Picking furniture before selecting paint colors.
It may be tempting to buy accessories and furniture before selecting paint but we advise against it. Instead, develop a color palette using both fabric and paint swatches. This will give you a better idea of how colors and textures work together before committing to either. In addition, make sure to take swatches home to see how they look with the room’s lighting.
10. Not incorporating mirrors into the room’s design.
Mirrors are a great way to make small spaces appear bigger. While this makes them ideal for bathrooms and small bedrooms or offices, don’t put a limit on where you utilize them. Mirrors create a bright and airy feel that’s perfect for any room.
